If I Can

On Monday, March 19th, OJSH held a short assembly for all students to recognize and showcase the achievements of our school’s volleyball and basketball teams. Principal Lobo introduced each of the teams as they came on stage. Each team and team member was cheered loudly by the audience. And, of course, the school mascot was in attendance to increase school spirit.

After the assembly, OJSH staff and students had the privilege of listening to Chris Koch. Chris is an extraordinary man. Born without arms or legs, he has accomplished much in his lifetime – more adventures, travels and opportunities than many able-bodied people have done. Chris is an Alberta farm boy turned world traveler, adventurer and motivational speaker. He continues to farm in Southern Alberta in between speaking engagements, travels and adventures. His unique message to the world is "If I Can".

Sponsored by Lac Ste. Anne County, Chris came to OJSH to tell his story of inspiration to the staff and students assembled in the gym. His uplifting message – presented with self-deprecating humour and honesty – was simple but powerful: anything is possible with vision and hard work. Chris encourages people to live life to the fullest: it is in his message that if he can do it, you can do it.

“I never have nor will I ever let limitations or obstacles in my life stand in the way of achieving my goals and dreams and I hope my message can inspire others to do the same.”
