Education Expo Held at OJSH

On November 1st, Onoway Junior Senior High School held its bi-annual Education Expo. In spite of a very snowy, chilly evening, the big turn-out from parents and students exceeded expectations.

Representatives from sixteen educational institutions and other career recruiters set up displays in the main foyer and hallway to showcase post-secondary education and career opportunities. Students and their parents were able to check out each display and talk to the various representatives to get an idea of what would work best for each individual student’s career aspirations.  Former OJSH student, Kathleen Kruper, was a representative for the U of A Engineering Faculty and she was able to pass on her experiences to our students and parents.

Grade 12 student Nawaal Basha attended the Expo in order to figure out which post-secondary institution to attend. After going through all of the displays and talking to presenters, Nawaal has decided to attend NAIT initially and then transfer to the University of Alberta.

Nawaal said the evening was “great” and that it was “actually better” than the post-secondary open houses she has attended. She said the Expo was very well organized and would highly recommend it to all students. Nawaal even brought her 14-year-old brother to the Expo so that he could experience it and begin to make post-secondary plans.

Parent and School Council President Mrs. Melanie Fitzgerald said: "It was a very informative experience and having the opportunity for both parents and students attend made it a great success.  The amount of attendees was overwhelming and tying it into the CALM course was a great idea."

At the end of the evening, presenters were very complimentary about our students. They said that OJSH students were very well prepared and had thoughtful questions. The presenters also said that they preferred our smaller school because it gave them the opportunity for meaningful conversations with students and parents. All presenters said they looked forward to coming back to OJSH in two years for the next Education Expo.

The list of representatives who were at the Education Expo were: the University of Alberta /Augustana; Mount Royal University; the Canadian Armed Forces; Lakeland College; Portage College; Red Deer College; Norquest; SAIT; University of Lethbridge; Ambrose University; University of Calgary; Kings University; Concordia University; St Mary's University; MacEwan University and Lethbridge College. Some other post-secondary institutions were unable to come to the Expo due to poor winter driving conditions.

Parents and students are encouraged to speak to one of the counsellors if they would like further information regarding post-secondary opportunities for our students.
